Nike’s releasing the Zoom Freak 2 this Friday

Posted on Jul 21, 2020 in Nike

The Freak is back.

With the NBA Restart a little over a week away, you know that Giannis is gunning to claim the Larry O’Brien trophy as the no.1 seed in the A. As Giannis and the Bucks go to battle, Nike Basketball recently unveiled his latest signature shoe, the Zoom Freak 2.

For those who didn’t see our unveiling on Instagram (@solemovement), Nike’s design team used the Zoom Freak 2 as a means to better understand how Giannis is on the court. They tried to take one of his most unstoppable moves and found a way to make it even more effective by way of the shoes on his feet.

Antetokounmpo is a very special specimen and his physique directly translates to his movements on the court. The design team looked at his moves, say the Eurostep, and realized that they need to relieve pressure while keeping him contained at the same time propel him further.

With this in mind, Nike decided on the following things to make the Zoom Freak 2 well equipped for players like Giannis Antetokounmpo:

Decoupled Outsole

Unlike the Zoom Freak 1, the new shoe features a decoupled outsole, separated into two, with a supportive shank embedded in the midsole. This keeps Giannis grounded and flexible to fit the way he moves. The shoe also features a reinforced outrigger on the lateral side, giving Giannis more ground contact and stability.

Advance & Support

In terms of cushioning, the Zoom Freak 2 comes with a Zoom Air unit at the forefoot and soft, lightweight foam in the heel. To put it simply – explosiveness in the forefoot, support by way of the heel.

Control His Quickness

Control is key with the Zoom Freak 2. With the shoe’s upper, Nike wanted the player to have the ultimate flexibility where its needed the most. The second eyelit down to the bottom of the throat works as a boundary zone of the shoe. It keeps the foot contained, while the rest becomes flexible, helping Giannis without any restriction.

The Nike Zoom Freak 2 officially drops this Friday, July 24, in the ‘Naija’ colorway. Giannis’ parents grew up in Nigeria and this colorway is inspired by the colors of football kits of the Nigerian Football Team. Charles, Giannis’ late father, used to bond with his children playing football and the Naija is an homage to that passion growing up.

The Nike Zoom Freak 2 ‘Naija’ retails for Php 6,445 and will be available via nike.com/ph. We’ve yet to get confirmation on the local release at Titan and Nike stores. Check the official images of the ‘Naija’ below.
