Clean Slate: Nike celebrates the Air Max 90’s 30th Anniversary
The Air Max III.
Tinker Hatfield designed a gem when he unveiled the Air Max 1 back in ’87. The third iteration of the Air Max line was no different. With the enlarged window, better flexibility, bright infrared hits, and a multi-port lacing system for better fit options, the Air Max 90 was definitely making a case as the best ever. To this day, I would still classify the Infrared 90s as one of my all-time favorites.
Over the last 30 years, the shoe has definitely become a cult classic. We’ve seen Nike create hundreds of color ups and variations of AM90, making the shoe a staple in the scene. As we hit 2020, the Air Max 90 goes back to its roots – down to the original design, the right scale, toe box height and heel panel. Nike’s set to release several in its original color blockings and then some but everything starts with a clean slate. With pearlized lace dubraes, a leather tongue logo (definitely a nice touch). and a clean monochromatic sail look, the Air Max 90 looks pristine as can be.
To add additional detail, the sockliner also features a hidden “Easter Egg” – Nike added a graphic of the Air Max 1 outsole on the bottom. To add to the nostalgia, Nike’s also re-introducing the original skinny box with the hazard stripes that was used back in the early 90s. For more details on what makes this as close as the original, here’s a breakdown of the 2020 Air Max 90:
- TPU Eyelet Pieces
- Faster, Sleeker Deconstructed Toe
- Lower, More Dynamic Mudguard
- Pattern Split on Medial Side
- Original Swoosh Shape, Running Parallel to Quarter
- Quarter/Tip Panel with Stitch Through Internal Lining
- Lower, Faster Shape
- TPU Underlay with Original Logo Shape
- Rubber Heel Logo with Original Shape
