STAY ME7O: Carmelo Anthony’s the latest FIBA World Cup 2023 Global Ambassador
Carmelo Anthony is in Manila?!
If you were wondering why 10-time NBA All-Star and 3-time Olympic Gold medalist is in town, don’t be alarmed. He’s not taking his talents to Manila for any of the PBA ballclubs. If you’ve been following the news, Anthony was introduced as the third FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Global Ambassador.
With the games tipping off this August in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, Melo was in town to promote the upcoming event as well as watch the last window of Asian Qualifiers here in Manila. Anthony joins Argentina’s Luis Scola and Spain’s Pau Gasol as Global Ambassadors, all promoting the World Cup which last happend back in 2019 (China).
“I’ve proudly represented the USA on the world’s largest stages, and the World Cup is the toughest competition in international basketball,” Carmelo said. “It’s all about striking a perfect balance of personnel, talent and having that great chemistry. I’m looking forward to supporting all the players at the World Cup this year and celebrating the sport on a global scale.”
Anthony’s no stranger to international competition. Aside from participating in the Olympics as part of the Redeem Team (2008), ‘Captain America’ played for Team USA from 2004 to 2016, as well as a stint with the team that played in the 2006 World Cup (Japan) and FIBA AmeriCup in ’07.
After meeting the media at the storied Araneta Coliseum yesterday afternoon, Anthony went on to watch the Philippines vs Lebanon match at the Philippine Arena. Gilas Pilipinas won, 107-96.
