A Walk Down Haji Lane

I took a really quick trip to Singapore two weekends back and tried to get some rest (and some shopping) while I was there. I was in the midst of the Great Singapore Sale so stores left and right had great deals– every store wanted you to burn money at their installation. Aside checking out the usual shopping spots- Orchard Road, Marina Bay/Harbour Front, Queensway (for sneakers/sportswear), I decided to check out Haji Lane. Haji Lane is Singapore’s answer to Cubao X or the Collective. Lots of indie stores (mostly for girls), quaint little restos, and really cool works of art. The vibe was great and I’d like to think it would’ve been better had the weather cooperated.

One store that’s been around a while, and for me the best one, was Know It Nothing. The store carried both local and international brands, kinda like our friends at Commune. The store definitely looks great and after a whole morning of walking all over the city, the cleanliness of the store really made me appreciate the style and vibe they’re trying to evoke.

In terms of brands, KiN carries a couple- Generic Surplus, PF Flyers, Maiden Noir, SIFR, MHI, Julian Red, Engineered Garments, SWEAR, UBIQ, Wood Wood and a host of others. I was able to buy a couple of Tees here and had a little chat with the people from the store. He mentioned that the store’s taste/style/vibe has changed over the years. They used to cater to a younger audience, but they too grew up and grew into their own preferences.

Aside from KiN, a couple of other stores had pretty nice displays and whatnot. I had 1 day to go all over the city and although Haji Lane was right smack in the middle of my day, it was a welcome break to the busy day. I really suggest you guys check out Haji Lane. It’s a cool strip worth checking out. For more photos on Haji Lane, check out the Sole Movement post as well as the Haji Lane photo album on Sole Movement’s photo album.
